Employment:

  • Employment Tribunals
    Hears claims about matters to do with employment. These include unfair dismissal, redundancy payments and discrimination. Also deal with a range of claims relating to wages and other payments

Finance/ Revenue:

  • Financial Services and Markets Tribunal
    Hears references arising from decision notices issued by the Financial Services Authority
  • General Commissioners (for England and Wales)
    Hear and determine appeals from taxpayers against decisions of HM Revenue and Customs relating to income tax, corporation tax, capital gains tax and national insurance
  • Special Commissioners
    Hear and determine appeals against decisions of HM Revenue and Customs relating to all direct taxes eg income tax, corporation tax, capital gains tax and capital transfer tax
  • VAT and Duties Tribunals
    Hear and determine appeals and applications concerning decisions of HM Revenue and Customs relating to VAT, Customs and Excise duties, landfill tax and insurance premium tax

Health and Care:

  • Care Standards Tribunal
    Deals with appeals against decisions of various Government bodies in respect of independent residential care, nursing homes, voluntary homes and registered children's homes
  • Family Health Service Appeal Authority
    Hears appeals against decisions of Health Authorities to suspend or remove an individual from the Health Authority list of practitioners.
  • Mental Health Review Tribunal
    Reviews the cases of patients detained under the Mental Health Act and directs the discharge of any 'unrestricted' patients where the statutory criteria have been satisfied. In some cases the Tribunal has the discretion to discharge patients who do not meet the statutory criteria
  • Mental Health Review Tribunals for Wales

  • National Appeal Panel for Entry to the Pharmaceutical List (Scotland)
    Considers appeals against decisions taken by Pharmacy Practices Committees in relation to applications for entry to the Pharmaceutical List, or for major relocation of premises from which pharmaceutical services are provided
  • National Health Service Inquiries
    Appeals to the Secretary of State from decisions of Health Authorities [delegated to the Family Health Services Appeal Unit]

Immigration and Asylum:

  • Asylum and Immigration Tribunal
    Single-tier Tribunal superseding the Immigration Adjudicators and Immigration Appeal Tribunal in April 2005. Determines appeals against refusal to enter or remain in the United Kingdom and in Asylum cases
  • Asylum Support Adjudicators
    Determine appeals against a refusal or termination of support by the National Asylum Support Service
  • Immigration Services Tribunal
    Hears appeals against decisions of the Immigration Services Commissioner concerning the registration and exemption of immigration advisers and considers disciplinary charges brought by the Commissioner against immigration advisers

  • Adjudication Panel for England
    Hears and adjudicate on matters concerning the conduct of local authority members, including references made to it by an Ethical Standards Officer of the Standards Board for England, and appeals pursuant to the The Local Authorities (Code of Conduct)(Local Determination) Regulations 2003
  • Adjudication Panel for Wales

  • Agricultural Land Tribunals
    Settle disputes and other issues which cannot be resolved by agricultural landlords and tenants, and drainage disputes between neighbours
  • Agricultural Land Tribunals (Wales)

  • Lands Tribunal
    Covers disputed claims for compensation for compulsory purchase of land; appeals from valuation tribunals in rating valuation cases; and discharge or modification of restrictive covenants affecting freehold land
  • Lands Tribunal for Scotland

  • Planning Inquiries
    The Planning Inspectorate processes various planning and enforcement appeals and holds inquiries into local development plans and Local Development Frameworks
  • Residential Property Tribunal for Wales

  • Residential Property Tribunal Service
    Panels constituted to decide appeals against fair rent determinations and to determine a rent; to adjudicate in disputes about the enfranchisement of holding renewals and service charges/insurance etc; or to decide if an authority can prevent a home being bought on grounds of suitability for occupation by elderly people
  • Valuation Tribunals
    Hear appeals concerning Council Tax, Non-Domestic Rating and Land Drainage Rates in England and Wales

Traffic/ Transport:

  • Traffic Penalty Tribunal
    The Traffic Penalty Tribunal decides appeals against parking penalties issued by Civil Enforcement Authorities in England (outside London) and Wales and against bus lane penalties issued by Civil Enforcement Authorities in England (outside London). 
  • Parking Adjudicators (Parking and Traffic Appeals Service)
    Adjudicators of the PTAS hear parking appeals against liability for parking and bus lane penalties in London
  • Road User Charging Adjudicators
    Appeals against enforcement and adjudication of road user (congestion) charging schemes in Greater London
  • Traffic Commissioners
    Licensing of operators of Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs) and Public Service Vehicles (PSVs); registration of local bus services; and granting vocational licences to and taking action against drivers of HGVs and PSVs
  • Transport Tribunal
    Hear appeals against decisions of Traffic Commissioners regarding goods and public service vehicle operator licenses and DSA decisions regarding driving instruction licenses

  • Competition Appeal Tribunal
    Hears appeals against certain decisions taken by the Office of Fair Trading or sectoral regulators under the Competition Act 1998
  • Comptroller-General of Patents, Designs and Trade Marks
    The Comptroller (also known as the Registrar of Trade Marks or Designs) has a jurisdiction to hear a range of ex parte and inter partes disputes in the fields of trade marks, patents, registered designs and unregistered designs
  • Copyright Tribunal
    Decides, where the parties cannot agree between themselves, the terms and conditions of licences offered by, or licensing schemes operated by, collective licensing bodies in the copyright and related rights area.
  • Gender Recognition Panel
    established under the Gender Recognition Act 2004 to assess applications from transsexual people for legal recognition in their acquired gender.
  • Information Commissioner
    May impose various sanctions against data users who fail to comply with the standards of information handling required by the Data Protection Act 1998
  • Information Tribunal
    Hears appeals against Data Protection enforcement notices issued by the Information Commissioner, national security exemptions, FOI appeals 2005
  • Office of Fair Trading
    Hears representations made against a "minded to refuse/revoke/suspend/grant in different terms" notice in respect of licences issued under the Consumer Credit Act 1974 and a "notice of proposal" under the Estate Agents Act 1979
