Transforming Tribunals: Consultation

(28 November 2007)

The Tribunals Service is consulting on plans to implement part 1 of the Tribunals, Courts and Enforcement Act 2007. Deadline for responses: 22 February 2008.

The consultation paper sets out changes proposed in the administrative justice and tribunals world that began with the Leggatt Report. It sets out the role of tribunals in the wider context of the various systems that deliver justice and examines out the role of the Administrative Justice & Tribunals Council. It also describes the recent changes to the ways in which tribunals are organised and supported and provides more detail on the future organisation of the system, seeking views on a number of specific issues, including:

  • Proposals for the First-tier and Upper Tribunals created by the Act;
  • How the Chambers in the new Tribunals should be structured;
  • The assignment of judges within and across the Chambers; and
  • The role of non-legal members in the new structure.

The consultation period will run for 12 weeks with responses sought by 22 February 2008.
