Statutory Basis: Section 4 of the Public Passenger Vehicles Act 1981
Description: Traffic commissioners are statutorily responsible for administering the operator licensing system, which they regulate in accordance with the legislation. The commissioners' licence operators of heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) and of buses and coaches (Public Service Vehicles, PSVs) and take action against those who fail to meet their statutory obligations. They are also involved with the registration of local bus services and may take action against the vocational driving entitlement of HGV and PSV drivers.Traffic commissioners do not currently have their own web page. Information about the traffic commissioners and copies of their annual reports can be found on the DfT (Department for Transport) website. Information relating to VOSA (Vehicle and Operator Services Agency), which provides administrative support to the commissioners, can be found on the VOSA website.
