Visits
Operating under the Tribunals, Courts and Enforcement Act 2007, AJTC members make regular observational visits to tribunals and inquiries and attend training seminars and conferences.
These visits and attendances enable AJTC members to:
- see the tribunals at work
- talk to members and staff of tribunals
- develop a knowledge and understanding of the problems facing tribunals and inquiries
- explain the AJTC's work
Why are AJTC members able to attend hearings?
Schedule 7 of the Tribunals, Courts and Enforcement Act 2007 states:
23 (1) A member of any of
a) the Council
b) the Scottish Committee,
c) the Welsh Committee,
may attend (as observer) proceedings of a listed tribunal or of a statutory inquiry.
(2) The right under sub-paragraph (1) applies even in respect of proceedings
a) taking the form of a hearing held in private, or
b) not taking the form of a hearing.
(3) The right under sub-paragraph (1) is subject to any statutory provision by which members of the Council, members of the Scottish Committee or members of the Welsh Committee are expressly excluded from proceedings.
Registering a hearing
Tribunals are requested to notify our Visits Officer with details of forthcoming hearings.
If you are a tribunal administrator and wish to register notification of a hearing to the AJTC please contact our Visits Officer. Our visits officer will be in touch should a member wish to visit.
